Pundits are struggling to make sense of gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey as they look for a unifying and solvable mistake across the campaigns. The consensus around former Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s purple-state implosion seems clear to some: Critical Race Theory and white grievance flipped moderates and galvanized the state’s conservative base. McAuliffe telling parents he believed they should have no say in the education of their children in the state’s public schools apparently had no role to play. Here, if McAuliffe was guilty of anything, it was saying what he really believed and not reading the room after he said it.
