Chester, N.J.: In “Green energy move may be painful” (op-ed, Dec. 4): Pat Smith paints a bleak and unlikely picture of forced replacements of working appliances and higher costs. As someone who has owned a plug-in hybrid and an electric vehicle, the costs of maintenance and “fuel” are significantly lower. The cost of buying an EV is forecast to be lower than that of an internal combustion vehicle in a few short years due to lower battery costs, fewer parts and lower labor costs. Stove and furnace replacements will likely be driven by carbon taxes, not imaginary “appliance police.”
