Wappingers Falls, N.Y.: Heifer International, a group that sends live animals to “underdeveloped” countries, is in the midst of its holiday fundraising. While this group, whose CEO takes almost half a million dollars per year, relies on a benevolent image, the reality is that the animals and their offspring may be sentenced to neglect, outright abuse and painful deaths in slaughterhouses that are likely unregulated.
