All I want for Chanukah is a Christmas tree

The same mid-century walnut-grained dining room table that my 1960s West Hempstead family gathered around while my mother lit shabbos candles every Friday night, where my relatives assembled every spring for a customary seder, sipping Manischewitz and recounting the plight of ancestral Jews, was improbably repurposed the last week in December to celebrate another family tradition: Christmas. Great Grandma’s kosher-for-Passover Rosenthal porcelain plates were seamlessly replaced by a festive set of Lennox bone china delicately painted with red poinsettias and sprigs of green holly.
